IBM LTO4 Tape Format’s Encryption Technology

Information that has been encrypted by the LTO-4 drive can be recorded on both medias of LTO ultrium WORM and rewritable, so that the data integrity could be maintained. The IBM LTO 35L2086 universal cleaning cartridge is compatible and effective in all the LTO ultrium drives. LTO4 tape technology can read LTO-2 2nd generation ultrium media with speed up to 35 megabytes/sec and can read as well as record data on LTO3 media at rate of 80 megabytes/sec. LTO-4 can record & write the LTO ultrium-4 cartridge at speed of 120 megabytes/sec.

IBM LTO4 tape drive offers data throughput at 240MBps with 1.6-TB recording capacity. IBM 95P4437 LTO4 has the WORM (write once read many) media and provides the reliable 256-AES Encryption technology. Consumer information is the most valuable asset for the organization and therefore there should be a reliable and robust storage solution for its recording and protection. IBM LTO4 tape has all the latest and innovative features to protect & record the precious and vital information for longer time periods.

There are numerous challenges relating to the protection of data tapes. The data tape needs to be protected when it is transferred from main data center and access to the information is needed when it arrives at the business partner’s business continuance location. Encryption is the most powerful and reliable mechanism for data protection. Encrypted information is in the un-readable form. Encryption key is managed by the tape library, at system level or through the application. The effect of encryption on the performance of IBM LTO 4 tape technology is less than 1% and reduces overall cost.

Data encryption requires a “key” and an encryption technique. Keys are bit streams comprising of 128, 192 & 256-bits. The most commonly used technique for encryption is the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). Encrypted information is in the un-readable form. Encryption key is managed by the tape library, at system level or through the application. The effect of encryption on the performance of IBM LTO 4 tape technology is less than 1% and reduces overall cost. IBM LTO4 95P4436 tape supports encryption and compression thus stabilizing the efficiency of ultrium storage media. So there is no longer need for server resources or dedicated hardware appliances to encrypt the data.

IBM was the pioneer in introducing the tape encryption technology. Specifications of LTO-4 ultrium tape supports increased capacity and enhancements of performance. Single LTO4 tape cartridge can accommodate data of 8 first generation LTO1 ultrium cartridges and compressed information of 1.6 terabytes. IBM LTO 4 technology supports native data rate up to 120MB/s, assisting the organizations in efficient management of the backup windows. LTO4 tape specification includes all the advantageous technologies and techniques of third generation LTO3.

IBM ultrium LTO4 has independent tape-loader, ECC (Error Correction Code) and the WORM capability. IBM LTO-4 technology has the statistical analysis & reporting feature that secures the data and improves the reliability. Hardware of IBM LTO4 technology features attachments to ultra-160 LVD-SCSI, 3 GB/s SAS, or 4 GB/s FC with system of encryption. 128MB internal buffer was used in the LTO-3 tape drive which has been doubled to 256 megabytes in the LTO-4 tape drive.
